How does your mine site assess a haul road?
For most operations, the answer hasn’t shifted in decades. A complaint comes through on the radio. A light vehicle heads out. A grader operator gets directed to go find some stuff. The road gets worked on somewhere, and the site moves on.
That’s reactive management. And across the mining industry, it’s quietly costing operations far more than the maintenance bill suggests.
When the Assessment Method Doesn’t Match the Machine
Traditional inspection approaches have a structural flaw: they fundamentally misrepresent the conditions.
A light vehicle moving at 60 kilometres per hour tells you nothing about the forces applied to a several-hundred-tonne haul truck travelling the same stretch under a full load. Drone surveys are an improvement, but they capture data at scheduled intervals, at limited resolution, with no capacity for real-time action. None of these methods see the road the way the haulage fleet does.
That gap is what we built our technology to close. Our sensing system captures road conditions at half-metre intervals, continuously, from the perspective of the vehicles that drive the circuit. The haul road stops being an asset you react to. It becomes one you actively manage.
Turning Millions of Data Points Into One Clear Action
Capturing granular road data creates its own challenge: what do site teams actually do with it?
We learned this quickly. Modern mine sites are already processing more information than their teams can realistically absorb. When we deployed, our data was rich, accurate, and largely unused because there was no straightforward way to act on it fast enough.
The shift came when we stopped thinking about data delivery and started thinking about action. Strip away everything that isn’t immediately useful. Reduce a complex dataset to a single signal: go or stop, clear or hazardous. An operator reads it in a fraction of a second. When the system detects a hazard, it automatically sends a targeted work order to the nearest maintenance crew, without requiring a supervisor to interpret, coordinate, or follow up.
Adoption reached 100%. The technology worked precisely because it removed the decision burden rather than adding to it.
The Road the Industry Is Building Toward
Battery-electric and autonomous fleets are arriving in mining. The productivity case is clear. What’s less discussed is what those fleets need to perform consistently: a road surface that’s smooth, predictable, and accurately measured.
Rolling resistance drains electric batteries fast. Autonomous systems halt when they can’t read conditions precisely. The data infrastructure surrounding the vehicle matters as much as the vehicle itself. Over the past year, we’ve validated this case across operations in 19 countries, with Tier 1 alliances in Canada and Latin America confirming consistent results across very different operating environments.
