Broke off from my work the other day
I spent the evening thinking about
All the blood that flowed away
Across the ocean to the second chance
I wonder how it got on when it reached the promised land?
The singer pictures the long stretch of ocean that leads from Scotland to America - 'the promised land', and the country to whom he has recently lost a friend, relative or possibly a lover. He reflects on Scotland's bloody past, and on whether the person he has lost has managed to achieve a better life in the States. This is, presumably, what he yearns to hear about in the titular letter.
