Dire Straits - Money for Nothing lyrics meaning

Meaning

'Money For Nothing' opens with this instantly recognisable introduction, written and sung by Sting. The lyric sets the premise of the song, which is told from the perspective of a working-class man watching MTV and his observations of the lives of rock stars compared to his own life. MTV was a relatively new, but hugely popular cable TV channel at the time of the songs release in 1985, having only been launched four years prior.

Recorded at Air Studios in Montserrat, where Dire Straits were working on their fifth studio album Brothers In Arms, Sting happened to be visiting the Caribbean Island and composed the line "I want my MTV", based on the same melody of "Don't Stand So Close to Me". Sting is credited as a co-writer of the song as a result, and was embarrassed when he learnt that his publishing company pursued for royalties.
