I saw two shooting stars last night
I wished on them, but they were only satellites
It's wrong to wish on space hardware
I wish, I wish, I wish you'd care

Billy Bragg - A New England lyrics meaning

At the time of writing “A New England”, Bragg was seeking romantic inspiration. He claims to have written the origins of the song after a night at the pub, when he saw two shooting stars and wished upon them, only to later realise they were satellites. Bragg then hastily wrote the verse on the wrapping of his fish and chips, later setting it to the melody of Thin Lizzy’s Cowboy Song.
