[Galia]
That is referring back, I think, again, to one of the themes from In the Black, which is that however much you might nurture another human being and even bring them into existence, you don’t own them. You can’t own people.[Carim]
Yeah, and they will still turn out to be someone different than you might expect or might want or- and it’s best not to interfere too much in that direction because it won’t work.[Galia]
Not too much moulding.
[Carim]
We are made out of the sun or of supernova… is it supernovi or supernovae… the plural?[Galia]
I don’t know what the plural… I don’t know the plural.[Carim]
It’s quite tricky… Anyway, we’re just part of a supernova and all the elements in our body comes from stars and I think that was… was it your daughter?[Galia]
It was, yeah, my daughter was…[Carim]
That came up with the fact that we all…[Galia]
Yeah, she just said it. She was sitting, when she was three, she says quite profound things sometimes and that - not always intentionally - and that seemed like such a beautiful poetic line and I said, “can I have that?” and she “yes.” So we turned it into a song.
[Galia]
I think we wrote very, very quickly - ridiculously quickly, didn’t we? There was a lot of work for Carim afterwards working on comping all the parts that we’d played really, really quickly.[Carim]
Yeah, because I had to get Galia to the airport and we were, like, about half an hour before we could set off or had to set off. Then we, sort of, decided to do a track and we, sort of, managed to, sort of, record maybe 30 tracks on this song. Just with the car engine running in the background, sort of thing and then… some time…[Galia]
I think we both enjoyed that.[Carim]
Yeah.
[Carim]
I think Psapp’s solution to "will we ever learn" is it’s not so bad that we don’t… that we still do the same mistakes.[Galia]
No.[Carim]
It works for us at least.[Galia]
As much as it is a…[Carim]
And we, sort of, enjoyed them as well. So, I think, it’s not quite as dark as it might be at first glance, that line.[Galia]
Exactly. No, it’s maybe being aware that we have many failings but, not necessarily seeing that as a negative thing. I think a lot of the ways that we’ve created music have been because we haven’t necessarily been able to do things in the way that we planned it. Like, in some of the tracks we wanted to have a full brass section. But, in lieu of that, we had a vuvuzela and a rusty old trumpet that we found in someone’s back room that Carim played despite having never played a trumpet before. But, you know, that’s, sort of, I like that kind of “make do” DIY ethic and that’s something that we do within our music. So, yeah, it doesn’t matter if we live and learn or not. Hopefully we won’t.
