Let It Be lyrics

Facebook "Let It Be" by Paul McCartney appeared on the Beatles 12th and final studio album, 'Let It Be" - 1970. The inspiration for the song came from McCartney listening to the gospel music of Aretha Franklin. He started writing the song in 1968, during the 'The White Album' sessions. McCartney said of the song, "One night during this tense time, I had a dream. I saw my mum, who'd been dead ten years or so. And it was so great to see her because that's a wonderful thing about dreams; you actually are reunited with that person for a second. There they are and you appear to both be physically together again. It was so wonderful for me and she was very reassuring. In the dream she said, it'll be all right. I'm not sure if she used the words 'Let it be', but that was the gist of her advice, it was, 'Don't worry too much, it will turn out OK.' It was such a sweet dream. I woke up thinking, Oh, it was really great to visit with her again. I felt very blessed to have that dream. So that got me writing the song. I literally started off, 'Mother Mary', which was her name, 'When I find myself in times of trouble', which I certainly found myself in. The song was based on that dream."

McCartney presented a skeletal version to the band during the 'Let It Be' sessions. Lennon was brutally dismissive, mistaking McCartney's secular humanism for self-righteous piety. He was ultimately convinced of McCartney's motives, and the band put special effort into the song. Billy Preston put the finishing touches on the recording by adding a gospel-like organ part.

The album and this song became the eulogy for the band.

Verse 1When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom: let it be
And in my hour of darkness, she is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom: let it be

ChorusLet it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom: let it be

Verse 2And when the brokenhearted people living in the world agree
There will be an answer: let it be
For though they may be parted
There is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer: let it be

ChorusLet it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Yeah there will be an answer: let it be

Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom: let it be

Let it be, let it be
Ah let it be, yeah let it be
Whisper words of wisdom: let it be

Verse 3And when the night is cloudy
There is still a light that shines on me
Shine until tomorrow: let it be
I wake up to the sound of music, Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be

ChorusYeah let it be, let it be
Let it be, yeah let it be
Oh there will be an answer: let it be

Let it be, let it be
Let it be, yeah let it be
Oh there will be an answer: let it be

Let it be, let it be
Ah let it be, yeah let it be
Whisper words of wisdom: let it be
