Pet Shop Boys - West End Girls lyrics meaning

Meaning

Influenced by hip-hop music, TS Eliot and modern city life, West End Girls is a commentary on class and status.

It primarily describes the opposite ends of the City of London and their cultural status. London's western side is a wealthy and vibrant area, and the home of most of it's biggest theatres, nightspots and public places. East London, on the other hand, has a reputation for its crowded housing, high population density and poverty.

Google image searches for "west end" result in pictures of nightlife, colourful images of Leicester Square and cultural mainstays. Searching "east end" brings up grainy black and white photos of working-class children in the street, violent gangsters and Jack The Ripper.
