Mariah Carey’s last single, ‘Triumphant (Get ‘Em)’ was an even bigger flop than ‘Glitter,’ failing to even reach the US Hot 100 on its release last August in a country which she had previously scored 18 number ones in.
Its dismal commercial response perhaps explains then why her latest video appears to be the lowest-budget, and arguably most boring, of her career.
Indeed, despite being directed by David LaChappelle, the man behind Christina Aguilera’s ‘Dirrty’ and Jennifer Lopez’s ‘Do It Well,’ ‘Almost Home’ basically focuses on the American Idol judge lip-syncing on a stool, lip-syncing in front of a wind machine and lip-syncing whilst flicking her hair.
Appearing on the official soundtrack to Sam Raimi’s hugely enjoyable ‘Oz the Great and Powerful,’ the minimalistic black-and-white clip also features several shots from the film.
So at least there’s a chance to see the unlikely sight of a talking monkey, an army of munchkins and James Franco in a Mariah Carey video.
But with the shimmering electro R&B mid-tempo arguably her finest single in years, the whole thing feels like a bit of a missed opportunity.
