For one minute there it looked as though ‘New Boring’ singer-songwriter Tom Odell might have added to his recent BRITs Critics Choice Award victory.
But thankfully the panel of the BBC Sound of 2013 poll have decided to ignore him altogether and instead have named Californian sister trio Haim as the ones to watch over the next twelve months.
Now in its 11th year, the poll, compiled by 213 bloggers, critics and broadcasters, had earlier this week placed electro-R&B duo AlunaGeorge at No.2, US rapper Angel Haze at No.3, soul singer-songwriter Laura Mvula at No.4 and synth-pop trio CHVRCHES at No.5.
In a rare case of a Radio 1 DJ not talking total nonsense, Huw Stephens said of the result:
“Haim have an unapologetic passion for music that shines in their songs.
“They’re brilliant musicians who have a real talent for tunes that merge their tales of growing up in the 21st Century with a classic songwriting ability.”
Whilst Haim themselves took to Twitter to announce their joy at following in the footsteps of Adele, Ellie Goulding and Jessie J.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! So excited/honored to have won the BBC sound of 2013 poll!!! We kinda can’t believe it…. xo

Let’s hope they fare better than the last time a band received the accolade, The Bravery, back in 2005.
