Gotye Somebody1 560x315 Gotye scores best selling UK single of 2012

The perfect example of a slow-burner, Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ didn’t exactly sound like a million-selling number one single on first listen. But it eventually managed to lodge itself inside your brain until you were humming its ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’-esque xylophone hook in your sleep.

Just how successful the Belgian-Australian’s breakthrough hit became was confirmed with the Official Charts Company news that it sold more copies in 2012 than any other track, 1,318,000 to be exact.

The equally catchy ‘Call Me Maybe’ by Carly Rae Jepsen placed second, fun. ft Janelle Monae’s ‘We Are Young’ finished third, while the ubiquitous David Guetta landed at four with ‘Titanium.’

Despite winning the worst series of The X-Factor in the show’s history, Deirdre Barlow lookalike James Arthur sold enough copies of his debut single, ‘Impossible,’ in just two weeks to score the No.5 position, just ahead of the biggest novelty hit of the year, PSY’s ‘Gangnam Style.’

Elsewhere, in a Top 10 that is nowhere near as bad as you might expect, Nicki Minaj’s ‘Starships’ is at No.7, Jessie J’s ‘Domino’ is at No.8, Maroon 5’s ‘Payphone’ is at No.9, while despite only peaking at No.4 back in February, Flo Rida’s ‘Wild Ones’ is at No.10.
