90′s alternative rock band Garbage are back after a 5-year hiatus. The band are preparing to release their fifth studio album ‘Not Your Kind Of People’, marking the first album with fresh tracks since 2005′s ‘Bleed Like Me’.
Their lead single ‘Blood For Poppies’ gets a very old school video treatment, shot in standard non-widescreen and black & white, and sees the original line-up of Butch Vig, Steve Marker, Duke Erikson and Scottish lead singer Shirley Manson all present.
Although this first single may prove contrary to the following, Manson was recently quoted as saying that their new album is more akin to that of their original material before they moved to a more mainstream sound:
“People we’ve played it for [have said] it sounds like the first record, and I’m thinking to myself, ‘It doesn’t sound anything like the first record,’ but there is an energy there that’s, I think, reminiscent of the first record; a sort of hungriness is there.”
With millions of record sales under their belt in a career spanning almost 20 years, Garbage are releasing ‘Not Your Kind Of People’ independently on their own record label Stunvolume Records. Butch Vig commented on the daunting process of record company independence:
“We’re looking at this as free agents. We’re out of all our corporate responsibilities from the past, and initially we thought that was terrifying but now we think it’s liberating. We’re going to put the record out on our own label and just figure out how to license it and market it because we want it under our control.”
Garbage’s ‘Not Your Kind Of People’ gets released May 15th and is available for pre-order on iTunes now.
