Boy band star Duncan James has opened up about his sexuality, after much speculation from the tabloids in recent years. Speaking on The Big Reunion, he said:
“Being brought up as a strict Catholic, the whole gay thing in my head was bad and wrong. And it wasn’t until I was in the band, being around other gay guys, understanding that actually you can be gay. It’s alright to like other guys.”
He also spoke openly about his three year relationship with one of the group’s male backing dancers, saying that despite his strong feelings for him, he never felt like he could make it public. Sadly, the relationship broke down due to the pressures of trying to keep it out of the press.
Blue have been out of the spotlight for several years, though they’ve committed to take to the stage again, alongside the likes of Liberty X, Five and Hear’Say. During their heyday, they achieved massive chart success following their debut single All Rise.
The Big Reunion tour kicks off on the 3rd May 2013 in Sheffield, and will travel the length and breadth of the country.
Though it’s sad to hear about Duncan’s personal struggle, it can only be hoped that a pop star speaking out about his sexuality paves the way for more to do so in the future, without the fear of repercussions from the media.
