It’s beginning to feel like someone has declared this week an official ‘blast from the past’ week.
For after new singles from Shola Ama and Texas yesterday, forgotten early 00s R&B chanteuse Ashanti is the latest artist to join the comeback trail.
Of course, it seems impossible to imagine now, but at one point, Ashanti was one of the most successful female singers in the world.
Debut single, ‘Foolish,’ spent an incredible ten weeks at the top of the Billboard charts in 2002. Whilst both its self-titled parent album and 2003 follow-up, ‘Chapter II,’ also reached number one in the US.
But other than a lead role in the Broadway revival of ‘The Wiz,’ she’s been largely missing in action since 2008′s ‘The Declaration.’
But now she’s back with a brand new single, ‘Never Should Have,’ which is the kind of epic R&B ballad that Leona Lewis, Kelly Clarkson and Jordin Sparks have perfected in her absence.
Also released on iTunes today, the track will feature on her upcoming fifth studio effort, ‘Braveheart,’ alongside collaborations with R. Kelly, Busta Rhymes and Keyshia Cole.
