Things are getting strange, I'm starting to worry
This could be a case for Mulder and Scully
Things are getting strange, now I can't sleep alone

Catatonia - Mulder and Scully lyrics meaning

Meaning

The title of the song references US TV show The X-Files, a long running programme that ran with the slogan, “The Truth is Out There”. The show’s key protagonists FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully were fondly referred to as Mulder and Scully both on and off air. Cerys Matthews, the band’s front woman, has admitted that while she’s not a fan of the show she found the plot’s use of alien encounters and strange goings on to fit nicely with the concept of her lyrics.

The lyrics themselves do not centre around Mulder and Scully, but instead use the characters as a metaphor for a relationship gone wrong. Throughout its nine years in production, fans campaigned for Mulder and Scully to start a romantic relationship. This was originally written into the pilot episode, but removed to give Dana’s character more structure outside of the workplace.
